Letter from Seán Murphy (for Eamon de Valera) to J. Schlemann1 (Dublin)

Dublin, 15 October 1935

Sir,

I have the honour to refer to your call at this Department regarding the proposed exhibition at Olympia Theatre, Dublin, on Sunday, October 27th, of the film 'Triumph des Willens' and to inform you that I have consulted with the authorities concerned in this matter.

The Department of Justice are prepared to provide police protection. They would be glad to know the exact hour of the performance and how long it is likely to last.

The Government feel that it would be inadvisable to invite members of the Irish public to assist at this performance. It is felt that if the invitations to the showing of the film are confined to the German Colony here, no objection can be made, but that if the circle of guests be widened the occasion might be used for a hostile demonstration which would be embarrassing to all concerned.

Accept, Sir, the renewed assurance of my high consideration.
[stamped] (Signed) Seán Murphy
for the Minister

1 Dr J. Schlemann, Chargé d'Affaires, German Legation, Dublin.
