Joseph Walshe to John Chartres (Berlin)

Dublin, 8 August 1922

A Chara,
I am instructed to reply as follows to above:-

Your letter No. 1251, addressed to Mr. Gavan Duffy in his capacity as Minister of Foreign Affairs, is couched in language which, in view of the essential subordination of your position to his, must be considered as a grave and intolerable departure from ordinary usage.

The explanation purported to be given of the paragraph dealing with the Army is merely evasive and explains nothing. The same holds true of your answer to the complaint about the disproportionate space given to the Irregular Leaders. The 'chronological order of facts' as selected is equivalent to approval.

An explanation is still awaited.

The rest of your letter treats of matters entirely irrelevant and need not therefore be dealt with.

Le meas,
J.[oseph] Walshe
Fo-Runaidhe
