Letter from Thomas J. Kiernan to Frederick H. Boland (Dublin)

Canberra, 5 December 1946

I have met here Mr. Nehru,1 nephew of the leader of the Congress Party, Pandit Nehru. He told me that India was not represented at the recent Commonwealth trade talks in London, partly in the belief that Ireland would not be represented; that his Department of External Affairs had recently recruited three hundred young men, as they intend to have widespread external representation and that Ireland would be asked to exchange representatives. He wanted to know about my status and said that undoubtedly India would follow any line of action we take to get proper recognition of its diplomatic representatives abroad.

1 Braj Kumar Nehru (1909-2001), Indian Ambassador to the United States (1961-8), High Commissioner to Britain (1973-7).
