Dearg code telegram from Joseph P. Walshe to Robert Brennan (Washington)
concerning Ireland's attendance at the San Francisco Conference
(No. 43)

DUBLIN, 24 February 1945

Your 65.1 You should reply 'Ireland's position as a neutral State is well known. In any case, question is purely hypothetical and there is nothing to be gained by such speculation.'

Since we are not one of United Nations, we do not expect invitation and it would be bad thing to give remotest impression that we want one.

1 Not printed. On 22 February Brennan sought instructions from Dublin as to his reply if questioned on the possibility of Ireland's attendance at the San Francisco conference which led to the establishment of the United Nations.
