Personal code telegram from the Department of External Affairs to

(No. 64)

DUBLIN, 15 March 1941

Press Association reports from Washington President Roosevelt's statement that he had not heard officially about Mr. Aiken's visit. There is implication of discourtesy which might make Aiken's situation awkward. American Minister in Dublin conveyed to Taoiseach reply of approval from State Department received 1st March. Have requested Legation to communicate with State Department but you should see them immediately and request correction.1

1 Handwritten marginal note by Walshe dated 15 March 1941: 'The request was made originally through Mr. Gray in order to give him the satisfaction of being the first to convey to his Govt. the news of a project which [he] had been for months encouraging.'
