If the sky fell we should catch larks, and such is the hope of securing the end of the struggle with England through a prior agreement with the Unionist minority.

From my interview with Sir James Craig I am convinced that nothing is to be gained by a further conference with him.² This is at bottom an Irish-English question, and its solution must be sought in the larger general play of English interests. Carson can envisage it in that light, and knows how to solve it. I do not think however a meeting with me would in any way affect his will in the matter.
