Letter from Joseph D. Brennan to Conor Cruise O'Brien (Dublin)
(Ref: Films/52)

Washington DC, 17 April 1952

Last night I attended a preview of the movie made by John Ford1 in Cong, Co. Galway, entitled ‘The Quiet Man’.

It ran for 2½ hours. The colour is beautiful. The scenery delightful. But – the theme is not likely to be well received here.

I take it for granted that you know all about this picture because I have been told that it had a preview in Dublin.2 I should be awfully glad to know what the reaction at home is to this production and I should be grateful if you would be good enough to let me have a reply as speedily as may be possible.

1 John Ford (1894-1973), American film director.

2 The film had not yet been previewed in Dublin.
