Letter from Seán Nunan to Joseph P. Walshe (Holy See)

Dublin, 6 October 1953

Thank you for your useful letters of the 6th and 9th July1 concerning the Williams articles. We also heard from Fred on the subject and I am sending you a copy of his report of 10th July2 for your personal information.

The Minister decided finally that Dr. Rynne should speak to Mr. Williams and put him right in regard to some of the more glaring misinterpretations. Dr. Rynne did so most effectively, I think, and there the matter rests.

We have heard nothing from Kerney regarding the action for libel which he was considering taking against Mr. Williams and the Irish Press.3

We are watching out for the volumes of documents on German foreign policy4 during the war period which are likely to be published very soon, according to Mr. Williams. The only volume we have so far is that issued by the Department of State, Washington in 1949.5 I suppose you have already heard of the extract from that volume which I am enclosing herewith.

1 See Nos. 208 and 209.

2 See No. 210.

3 See No. 211.

4 In the wake of the Second World War the Allies took ownership of the archival records of Germany's foreign policy. In the 1950s they began publishing the series Documents on German Foreign Policy 1918-45 (London, HMSO, 1957-83). Work on the project was sponsored by the United States, French and British governments. Desmond Williams worked on the series from September 1947 to September 1949.

5 Possibly Documents on German Foreign Policy 1918-45: Series D (1937-1945) Volume I. From Neurath to Ribbentrop, September 1937-September 1938 or From the Archives of the German Foreign Ministry (Washington DC: Government Printing Office, 1949).
