Dublin, 10 February 1955

There is this difference between the Greek and our problem: that in the case of Cyprus, the US Govt. is much more definitely interested in the strategical importance of Cyprus, especially since the changed situation in the Middle East.

Another (UN aspect) difference is indicated by the following: that the Soviet Ambassador in Australia told me we would never get a hearing on partition as he understood the Soviet view to be that it is a matter of internal disputation.

Generally speaking, Partition is always an advantage for the Soviet, – as for Britain.
