Following consideration of a memorandum submitted by the Minister for Defence¹ on an inspection of Knockalisheen Camp, County Clare, carried out by the Minister on the 2nd December, 1956, and of a report by the Minister for External Affairs on communications received by his Department from Mr. Hugh James McCann, Assistant Secretary of the Department,² it was decided

1. that the total number of refugees from Hungary to be admitted to Ireland, including those already admitted, should not be allowed to exceed 517 persons; and
2. that the Minister for External Affairs should have inquiries made, through the Ambassador in London, as to the possibility of arranging that employment would be found in Britain, in suitable cases, for refugees from Hungary admitted to Ireland.
