No. 460 NAI DFA/5/305/173/Pt II
New York, 5.15pm, 2 November 1956
Dulles resolution was only proposal before the Assembly. We voted for without speaking. Outstanding feature of debate was marked softening of original US reaction, similar trend obvious in US press. Assembly now awaiting reply of Powers concerned to Cease Fire and other provisions of resolution.
Opinion growing that UN action will achieve nothing but that recent events open new chapter troubles in Middle East.
Australia and New Zealand voted against resolution and abstainers included Canada, South Africa, Portugal, Holland and Belgium.
