Extract from the minutes of a meeting of the Cabinet
'Establishment of Diplomatic Relations with Japan'
(G.C. 7/185) (Item 2) (S16190)

Dublin, 19 February 1957

The Minister for External Affairs reported that an approach had been made to the Ambassador in London by the Japanese Ambassador1 in that city suggesting the establishment of diplomatic relations between Ireland and Japan.

It was agreed that it should be intimated that the appointment of a Japanese diplomatic representative in Dublin would be acceptable but that, for financial and other reasons, it would not be practicable to appoint an Irish representative in Tokyo.

1 Haruhiko Nishi (1893-1986), diplomat, Japanese Ambassador to the United Kingdom (1955-7).
