NEW YORK WORLD FAIR: Broadcasting Programme

Following the receipt of my letter of the 16th instant¹, Mr. McDunphy spoke to me and said that he had some doubt as to whether the occasion was of sufficient importance to justify a broadcast in which the President would take part but he asked me to have a further word with the Taoiseach about the matter. I spoke to the Taoiseach again today and he said that while he did not wish to press the point at all he felt that on the whole the balance was in favour of the President participating in the broadcast. He thought, however, that the President's contribution should be very short and should be confined to something in the nature of a greeting.

I communicated these views to Mr. McDunphy verbally today.
