Letter from Joseph P. Walshe to Kees van Hoek (Dublin)

DUBLIN, 13 June 1941

Dear Mr. van Hoek,

I have your letter of the 9th June.1 I am afraid I could not agree to your writing anything about our new quarters.2 We prefer to have as little publicity as possible about the Department, as we feel the less the Civil Service appears in the limelight the better. But I shall be very glad to see you at any time – without your notebook!

2 See No. 61. Iveagh House on St. Stephen's Green, Dublin, was presented to the Irish state by the 2nd Earl of Iveagh, Rupert Edward Cecil Guinness (1874-1967) in 1939. It became the headquarters of the Department of External Affairs on 14 May 1941.
