Aide-mémoire to the British Government concerning proposed changes to British nationality legislation

Dublin, 1 February 1947

  1. The Irish Government agree that the matters to be discussed at the forthcoming conference of experts include matters of great interest to them. They realise that the removal of the anomalous provisions of British law by which Irishmen and Irishwomen are deemed to be British subjects would do much to promote a better understanding and better relations between the peoples of the two islands. The Irish Government are prepared, accordingly, to send a delegation to be associated with the work of the conference.
  2. They must repeat, however, that the principles set out in the Aide-Mémoire of the 23rd January, 1947, are absolutely fundamental, and that the attitude of the delegation, in regard to every matter that may arise for discussion in so far as it may touch upon these principles, must necessarily be determined in accordance with them.
