Letter from Conor Cruise O'Brien to C.E. Kelly1 (Dublin)

Dublin, 14 October 1950

Dear Mr. Kelly,
It has been suggested to us by well-disposed people in the Six Counties that a greater proportion of Ulster material, cultural, historical, etc. on the Radio Éireann programmes would have a good effect in the North, especially among the Protestant part of the population there.

I should like to have an opportunity of discussing this with you sometime, at your convenience. I should add - hastily - that there is no question in this of our asking you to stage a propaganda drive or anything of that sort. All we would be interested in would be to give as many Six County Protestants as possible the habit of listening to Radio Éireann for good Ulster programmes and I am sure you agree with me that would be - and is to the extent which it at present prevails - a very desirable thing.

Perhaps you could let me know what time would suit you and I could drop over.

1 Charles Edward Kelly (1902-81), Director of Broadcasting, Radio Éireann (1948-52).
