Miss Murphy and I discussed with the Ambassador, Holy See (who is at home on leave) the question of according Irish de jure recognition to Israel.

The Ambassador was strongly of opinion that we should not recommend that such recognition be given until we hear from him that the Holy Father is satisfied with the policy of Israel in respect of the Holy Places. Meanwhile, it is clear that unless the Government are subjected to renewed pressure of an almost irresistible character (far stronger than the latest Israeli approach to Washington Embassy) the Dept. need take no initiative, pending Mr. Walshe’s ‘all clear’.
