I regret so big air raid 23rd August and subsequent raids [that] replies to your telegrams have been delayed. People are confused and communications disorganised. I have had lot to do looking for and helping Irish people. …

Your telegram 137.¹ Concrete case is that of Pokorny.² You will soon receive my letter. Visa did not help him. Police are averse to letting anybody out of Germany; they are afraid that information might leak out.

² Julius Pokorny (1887-1970), Celtic scholar who was Professor of Celtic Philology at the University of Berlin (1929-35). Pokorny lost his position after the Nazis discovered he was of Jewish descent. Pokorny escaped to Switzerland in 1943 and later taught at the University of Berne and the University of Zurich.
